National Urban League

The Civil Rights Act of 1964

The Situation

In the 48th edition of the State of Black America report, the National Urban League and its contributing authors reflect on a landmark piece of legislation that transformed everyday life in America, the Civil Rights Act of 1964. While the passing of this Act was the first time that the U.S. government addressed the unjust racial system in place, the fight for equality is far from over, even 60 years later.

Our Approach

Our cover centers around the current precarious state of our legal system, specifically the Supreme Court, as laws continue to be attacked and equity efforts such as Affirmative Action are dismantled. The contributing authors share their experiences as elected officials, civil rights advocates, and esteemed academics to provide their perspectives on strengthening civil rights protections for the 21st century.

The Equality Index

Using data provided by IHS Markit, the Equality Index shows how well Black Americans are doing in comparison to whites when it comes to their economic status, health, education, social justice, and civic engagement. By publishing the Index every two years, the National Urban League has a way to document progress toward its mission of economic empowerment for Black and Hispanic Americans relative to whites. We created comparison charts, infographics, and tabular data of the Index to supplement the narrative of the State of Black America report and help explain the racial inequality present in this country.

The Biden Progress Report

Nearing the end of President Biden’s first term in office, the National Urban League documents a full evaluation of the administration’s commitment to racial justice. This insightful report, released alongside the State of Black America report, assesses if meaningful policy changes for Black Americans across economic opportunity, education, health care, criminal justice, housing, the environment, and civil rights protections have been made.
