When we presented the five initial concepts to our friends at the National Urban League, they were immediately drawn to the fifth concept with the hand-drawn type. They loved that it was so raw and personal, making them feel like they were on the street as part of the movement. Once their decision was made, we began to work on fleshing out what the rest of the book would look like.

We began with two different directions and multiple concepts for each. One design was more symbol-driven, using the voting check mark as an immediate visual for what the book’s theme was about.

During our weekly ‘The State of Untuck’ pow-wow, we had this idea to start documenting our creative process over the life of a project. We thought it would be an awesome opportunity to get our crazy ideas that never make it to the light of day, some exposure. And, maybe, just maybe, it could provide a slight glimpse into the how and why of design, all while dispelling the magic pixie dust theory.
On March 17, 2012, at the 6th Annual Gala Latina hosted by Congreso de Latinos Unidos, festive burlap totes were presented as tokens of appreciation.

Whenever someone tells me to “Keep in touch!”, I think of my high school yearbooks that were littered with the phrase “KIT” followed by a phone number or, if the person was really popular, pager number. Then I think about how I never called any of those people. Ever. That’s fine to do in high school. However, in business, making connections and staying in touch are skills that should be sharply honed.
